Gloucester Rugby aims for Net Zero
Gloucester Rugby makes an Earth Day announcement
Earth Day takes place every year on April 22. It’s a day dedicated to raising awareness about environmental topics and highlighting the importance of protecting the planet. For Earth Day 2025, Gloucester Rugby made an exciting announcement regarding the club’s sustainability strategy.
The club shared on its social media platforms that it is committing to becoming a Net Zero organisation by 2035. Gloucester Rugby has also signed the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework and made the SME Climate Hub Commitment.
On this journey, Gloucester Rugby has been working with Climate Wise to measure and reduce its emissions. For the 2023/2024 season, it was calculated that the club had a carbon footprint of 1,235 tCO2e across its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, which includes fan travel.
Since setting its emissions baseline during the 2021/2022 season, they’ve managed to reduce their emissions by 15.64%. This aligns with their decarbonisation target, as Gloucester Rugby aims to reduce its emissions by 7.5% annually.
Reducing the Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions of a rugby club
On its emissions reduction journey, Gloucester Rugby has changed to 100% renewable energy tariffs for its stadium. The club is also working to electrify its fleet and has installed 4 electric vehicle charging points. To remove natural gas emissions, they plan to electrify appliances in their kitchen.
Regarding waste management, it’s estimated that Kingsholm Stadium produces around 100 tonnes of waste each year. The club is working with its waste management partner, Veolia, to reach zero waste to landfill. Currently, they’ve achieved a 60% recycling rate.
Throughout the 2023/2024 season, their stadium had 260,000 visitors. To involve fans in its sustainability journey, Gloucester Rugby will be partnering with Climate Wise to launch a carbon offsetting platform. Through it, fans will be able to calculate and offset the emissions arising from their travels to the stadium.
With 10 years to reach Net Zero, Gloucester Rugby is proactively working to reduce its emissions across its operations and value chain. Next year will mark the club’s first “Greener Matchday”. You can count on Wavezero to bring you the latest on the club’s sustainability initiatives!
