Liverpool Football Club champions sustainability in football
Partnering with 1PointFive to tackle merchandise emissions
After winning 5-1 against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday, Liverpool Football Club became the 2024/2025 Premier League champions. In doing so, they tied their rivals, Manchester United, who are 20-time English football champions.
Off the pitch, Liverpool Football Club is also championing climate action in sports. They released their latest sustainability report a week before winning the league, and earlier in March, they announced the launch of an exciting new collaboration.
The Reds will start working with 1PointFive, a US-based carbon capture and storage company. This partnership aims to remove from the atmosphere the emissions from a product line they will start offering to fans in the coming months.
Following production, the club will calculate the carbon footprint of the goods, from manufacturing to distribution to one of the club’s sites. Then, they will purchase equivalent amounts of carbon removal credits from 1PointFive.
“Joining forces with 1PointFive allows us to explore innovative carbon removal technologies, sharing knowledge, expertise and helping to advance our journey to half all-operational emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2040.”
Ben Latty, Chief Commercial Officer at Liverpool FC
In addition to drastic emission reductions, limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires removing billions of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere every year. With this partnership, Liverpool Football Club is demonstrating how the sports world can support the adoption of critically important climate change mitigation technology.
Liverpool Football Club shoots for Net Zero
As merchandise accounted for 16,359 tCO2e during Liverpool’s 2023/2024 season, which represents nearly 25% of the club’s emissions, the club’s partnership with 1PointFive can play a pivotal role in its decarbonisation journey.
Liverpool Football Club is dedicated to using the power of sports to limit the worst effects of climate change. Having signed the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework in 2021, the club is committed to halving its operational emissions by 50% by 2030 and reaching Net Zero by 2040.
2021 was also when the club launched its sustainability strategy: The Red Way. During the 2020/2021 season, they switched to renewable tariffs for their stadium, training centre and academy, creating savings of 2,636 tCO2e.
"Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at the club. Through The Red Way, we are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint and driving positive change for our people, planet and communities.”
Ben Latty, Chief Commercial Officer at Liverpool FC
As part of its strategy, the club is also leveraging biofuels to reduce the emissions associated with the team’s travels. Liverpool Football Club has invested in Sustainable Aviation Fuel for its flights, and they’re using fuels such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil for the team’s bus, which is 90% less carbon-intensive than diesel.
Since 2021, The Red Way has won multiple awards, such as ESG Programme of the Year at the Global Sustainability & ESG Awards 2024. By winning football trophies and earning sustainability achievements, Liverpool Football Club is demonstrating to the world of sports how teams can perform on and off the pitch.
